Superstitions Surrounding Eclipses

Eclipses have been occurring before the human race existed. Going all the way back to 3340 BCE. In Ireland rock carvings were found indicating solar eclipses. Skipping further into the future, surviving records from 2500 BCE show that Babylonians and ancient Chinese people did not only observe eclipses, but they were able to predict them. These ancient societies created many myths around what was creating eclipses. In Inuit folklore they believed that the solar eclipse happened when the Sun goddess, Malina, walked away from the Moon god, Anningan, after a fight. A solar eclipse would happen when Anningan caught up to Malina. Many places believed that the sun was being eaten by something. In ancient China, the belief was that a celestial dragon devoured the sun. People would bang drums and make loud noises to scare the dragon away. Some places, such as ancient Greece and the Tewa tribe in New Mexico, believed that when a solar eclipse happened it was because of angry gods. To this day, there are many superstitions relating to eclipses however they are flawed. Many people believe that they are an omen of something bad and to keep kids pregnant women inside during them. However these beliefs are not true and eclipses are naturally occurring and will bring no danger to those who witness them.
